Job Description
Reporting to Unit In-charge/ADON/DON, the Registered Midwife is responsible for performing a variety of duties which will assist the care of women in labour and provide a comprehensive antenatal, postnatal, gynecological and post-operative nursing care to all maternity patients and newborn. The staff renders a safe, competent, and individualized nursing care to patients with care needs ranging from basic to complex, including imparting patients/family education and support.
Key Outputs
Assessment
• Conducts head toe assessment on each assigned patient at within 24 hours of patient admission. For Example: – Pain Assessment – Nutritional Status – Conduct Assessment of Antenatal and post natal and Gymea patients. – Fall Assessment
• Conducts age specific assessment of patients.
• Assess maternal well-being during labour.
• Identifies the sign which indicate onset and progress of labour
• Assess and recognizes signs emergency situations and intervenes in a timely manner.
• Assess the growth and wellbeing of the foetus.
• Assesses patients/families health education needs and intervenes accordingly.
• Completes re-assessment of assigned patients by utilizing nursing process to identify care needs and documents it accurately in the appropriate form.
Planning
• Plans and prioritizes his/her work to provide best quality care according to patient’s need assessment and documents in care plan for each patient.
Implementation
• Provides age specific monitoring of patients
• Provides age specific management of patients requiring special care
• Delivers planned care (Total patient care) to all assigned patients.
• Provide comprehensive high quality cultural postnatal care for women and their new born.
• Administers medication safely, monitors patient responses to medication where indicated and reports related incidents promptly.
• Perform focused physical examination of the mother.
• Code Management – coordinates emergency measures to sustain life. Assists in handling cardiac arrest situation and Emergency Care – provide life-saving measures in life-threatening situations.
• Post-anaesthesia Care – monitors and manages the patient who has recently undergone Epidural Analgesia
• Fluid /Electrolyte management
• Ensure safe handling and proper use of equipment.
• Participates actively in patient/family education. Post natal care, new born – cord care, observe for jaundice, explain about the vaccination.
• Administer blood products administration following Blood Transfusion guideline.
• Takes and gives complete over of crash cart, stock medication, narcotics and refrigerator items.
• Provides and demonstrates skills on different Nursing Approach such as: Team, Total patient care and Primary Care.
• Ensure that the Unit Dose Medication System, I.V. Push Medications, Subcutaneous Injections, Intradermal Injections, Intramuscular Injections, Drug Compatibilities/Side Affects procedure and guidelines are followed accordingly.
• Administer Pitocin Augmentation or induction under the direction of admitting OB gyne physician
• Administer Intravenous infusions, performs Peripheral blood draws, blood draw from Central venous, and Blood transfusions
• Assist with Gynecologist with AROM (Artificial Rupture of Membranes) without consultation only if patient is in active labor, 3 cm, -1 station, and at least 80% effaced- as per doctor’s order
• Performs episiotomy care, post cessarian section care , cord care, and normal post partum care.
• Performs Urinary catheterization following aseptic procedure , assist with suture and staple removal, and performs wound care aseptically.
• Promote and support breastfeeding, facilatate the process of lactation and bonding supporting the mother -infant.
• Supports women and their families to promote health and well-being.
• Offers advice and midwifery care that respects the cultural and social needs of each woman and her family
• Uses the nursing process to plan, implement and evaluate holistic antenatal care in collaboration with the woman and her family
• Provides nutritional advice for pregnancy and lactation.
• Educates the woman about the onset and process of labour.
• Provides information about pain relief, birth positions and delivery options to facilitate informed choices.
• Facilitates the process of lactation and bonding, supporting the mother-infant.
• Provide high quality, culturally sensitive care during labour, conduct a safe delivery, and respond in emergency situations to maximize the health of women and the newborn.
• Provide comprehensive, high quality cultural post natal care for women and the new born.
• Performs focused physical examinations of the mother.
• Works collaboratively with other health care professionals to improve the delivery of services to women and families.
• Follows discharge procedure of his/her assigned patients according to hospital protocol, multidisciplinary care – plans and evaluate patient care with professionals form other disciplines.
• Evaluation
• Evaluates results of nursing interventions on assigned patients and modifies nursing care plans.
• Ensures all assigned patients got quality nursing care by reassessing patient’s health status as per requirment and before his/her shift ends.
• Evaluates the level of patients satisfaction at the end of his/her shift.
Documentation
• Document detailed physical examination of the mother.
• Document nutritional status of all assigned patients in patient’s chart and informs dietitian when ever required.
• Provides timely, comprehensive and complete nursing documentation as per nursing department protocol/standards.

Requirements
• HAAD Professional Qualification Requirement (PQR) for Registered Midwife
• 2 years experience in similar field
• Knowledge of current nursing practices with strong interpersonal and leadership skills is required
